A FIRE has caused extensive damage to a gym being built at the St Albans campus of Victoria University.
The fire broke out 4am this morning in the floor area of the building which contains a basketball court, gymnasium area and office area.
It spread up into the roof, severely damaging roof timbers, ductwork and electrical wiring.
A large section of the plaster board ceiling had to be removed to extinguish the fire.
Areas of the rest of the building were also damaged by heat, smoke and water.
The fire took 16 firefighters, including the aerial unit, to bring it under control.
