Sydenham kids’ crazy hair honours a mate

CHILDREN at Sydenham Kindergarten will come to class with crazy hair on Friday in a show of support for a former pupil who’s been battling leukaemia.

They will wear wigs, hair gel or dye their hair to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation’s annual World’s Greatest Shave.

The event is being organised by teacher Lisa Brown with the aim of supporting former student Aydin Hassan, 7, who was diagnosed with the disease in April last year. The Parkwood Green Primary School pupil has since undergone three bouts of chemotherapy. He had a bone marrow transplant in August and was given the all-clear by doctors soon after.

Children will dress in Aydin’s favourite colour, green. Aydin says he’s delighted the kindergarten is raising money for the foundation.

Each year about 11, 500 Australians are diagnosed with leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

Leukaemia Foundation state general manager Stephanie Hechenberger says money donated during the fund-raiser will fund free services to support people with the cancer and their family.

“Blood cancers are devastating and treatment can begin within 24 hours and continue for years,” Ms Hechenberger says.

“Money raised also funds vital blood cancer research.

We are aiming to raise $3.2 million in Victoria.”
