Green Walks: Healthy heart, active mind

A TAYLORS Lakes resident who’s reaping the benefits of a local walking program is encouraging other north-west residents to join her.

Secondary school teacher Kylee Clifford, on maternity leave, is warming up for the next Green Walks in the Park event at Brimbank Park this Thursday.

An initiative of the Heart Foundation and Bushwalking Victoria, Green Walks are aimed at getting more people walking more often.

Ms Clifford says the walks are a lot of fun and leave her feeling more energised.

“There was no pram-walking group in my area so I was keen to find another form of activity,” she says.

“The walks are perfect because the baby sleeps while I walk and I can leave whenever I like. It’s a great opportunity to meet new people in beautiful surroundings.”

According to the Heart Foundation, cardiovascular disease is Australia’s biggest killer, claiming a life every 46 minutes.

State chief executive Kathy Bell says cardiovascular disease is preventable with a healthy diet and regular exercise.

“Taking a ‘green walk’ will help to increase confidence, reduce stress, increase motivation and help the development of social, environmental and personal skills,” she said.

“Parks and nature are an important part of improving and maintaining health, both for individuals and the community.”

Ms Bell says walking for at least 30 minutes a day can help people maintain a healthy weight and improve their fitness and strength.
