A PROGRAM keeping vulnerable youth off the street and helping them complete their studies has received a helping hand.
Youth Junction’s twice-weekly ‘Homework Zone’ program gives students access to a study space and the internet, and information and help.
A $4500 grant from Optus will help the program cater for a growing number of students at Sunshine’s Visy Cares Hub.
General manager Karen Hart (pictured) says more young people in the western suburbs are at risk of disengaging from mainstream education.
“We have qualified facilitators helping with numeracy and literacy. These are opportunities their counterparts in other areas may take for granted so we’re helping to create a level playing field.”
As many as 20 students turn up to each session on a Monday or Tuesday afternoon, getting help with homework, assignments and study skills, as well as any other issues they may be facing.
