Performing arts is undergoing a revival in Brimbank and Sunshine-based group Moving Theatre is at the heart of it.
The group’s cabaret act Obsession was a big hit with local theatre-goers last year and is set to reach a wider audience when it plays at the Adelaide Fringe Festival on Friday and Saturday.
A journey through the seven deadly sins, Obsession is set in purgatory and explores the lives of seven characters who are put on trial and urged to redeem themselves of their sins.
It differs from traditional cabarets in that the audience gets to decide the fate of the characters.
The show is performed by a cast of 20 artists from the west aged 16-25.
One of the show’s writers, Pauline Agius says the group can’t wait to perform interstate.
“We’ve organised a mega road trip for Adelaide and everyone has worked really hard to develop the characters and make the show a special experience for audiences,” she says.
“We did a show at the Melbourne Fringe Festival last year and it was sold out. We got some great reviews and we also got great feedback from audiences in Brimbank when we played locally.”
Moving Theatre was founded by Ms Agius and Sean Moran in 2008 to promote arts in ‘dry’ communities like Sunshine.
She says young people in the municipality are beginning to embrace all forms of art.
“Art is definitely happening in Brimbank and it wasn’t like that a few years ago. There are more groups performing at big events and it gives young people confidence to produce more work.”
The Adelaide Fringe Festival finishes on March 18.
