Bike path to redemption

A PROJECT aimed at ending the cycle of crime has picked up a swag of awards.

Brimbank Council’s Green Wheels of Justice project won three awards at the recent Corrections Victoria community work partnerships ceremony.

The project involved offenders on community orders fixing unclaimed bikes donated from the Victoria Police depot.

The bikes were then donated to St Albans residents who lacked access to other forms of transport.

Green Wheels of Justice was deemed “most outstanding new project” and “best project in the region”, and received the “commissioner’s award”.

Council chief executive Nick Foa said offenders fixing recycled bikes were able to give back to the community while gaining skills and a TAFE statement of achievement.

“The bikes were then presented to 100 newly-arrived refugees and other transport-disadvantaged residents in St Albans, along with bike helmets being supplied by the RACV, road safety education courtesy of Victoria Police and multilingual information from the council.”

The Justice Department donated $24,000 to the project.
