Faulty lights blamed for Hillside fatality

A MOTORIST has claimed faulty street lights may have contributed to a Melton Highway crash that killed a Hillside cyclist last month.

A 36-year-old mother died after a collision with a car at the intersection of Gourlay Road and Melton Highway, Hillside, about 6am on February 10.

Police said the woman appeared to have entered the intersection against a red light.

She was not wearing a helmet, and headphones found at the scene led police to believe she might have been listening to music.

A Caroline Springs man, who did not want to be named, said street lights at the intersection had not been working for weeks.

The tradesman, who leaves home between 5.45 and 6.15am each morning, said there were four to six lights leading up to the site of the accident that didn’t work.

“If the lights have been put in place you would expect them to be working. At the time I leave for work it’s very dark at that busy intersection.”

VicRoads regional director Nial Finegan said the authority regularly inspected lighting as part of its maintenance program.

“VicRoads inspected this site on February 20 and found it to be working correctly. However, subsequent inspections have found a fault which has again caused a section of lighting to go out.”
