There’s no beating around the bush for pupils at Deer Park North Primary School as they prepare to rejuvenate local wetlands.
The school’s working bee and planting day on Friday, June 19, will be part of a project, dubbed School as a Catchment, aimed at creating
a greener, more environmentally friendly school.
Deer Park principal Liz Balharrie said the school wanted to show the way to the community in terms of environmental leadership and responsibility.
“We anticipate that increased greening can be achieved without greater water usage,” she said. “This project can reduce water
costs, reduce maintenance and remove pollutants.”
As part of the working bee, students and other members of the community will plant native and edible plants and trees.
Ms Balharrie said the project would provide the students with a strong example of being environmentally responsible.
The project will continue with construction of a vegetable garden and a wetland for treating stormwater runoff.
