Losing weight involves watching what you eat, but watching what you drink is just as critical.
Truganina resident Lillianna Arbanovski has lost more than 45 kilograms on a liquid diet that is also having an impact on preventing type 2 diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes results from both genetic and environmental factors, although the risk is greatly increased by lifestyle issues, such as high blood pressure, being overweight or obese, having insufficient physical activity or a poor diet.
Ms Arbanovski, a finalist in the Slimmer of the Year awards, said a healthier lifestyle has given her a better outlook on life as well.
“I’m feeling awesome. It’s helped volumes with my self-confidence,” she said.
International research indicates that a low calorie liquid diet may help in treating and preventing the onset of type 2 diabetes.
University of Surrey professor Anthony Leeds believes low calorie liquid diets will be the standard approach for people with type 2 diabetes in a couple of years.
“We already know that formula diet programs … can give enough weight loss to improve control of diabetes,” he said.
“We know that the health benefits can be maintained.”
Ms Arbanovski attests to the diet’s many health benefits.
“Before, I used to get puffed out doing anything, even putting shoes on. Heart disease, diabetes, cholesterol were all a risk. But with the right motivation you can do it on your own.”
