Big V women: Comeback Keilor has no plans to slow

After a horror start, Keilor has put its women’s Big V basketball season back on track.

The Thunder was 0-4 after a month best forgotten, anchored to the bottom of the division 1 ladder.

But a rejuvenated Keilor outfit found top form again in recent weeks, winning three of its past five games.

Thunder coach Carey Paps was rapt with the way his players responded after a challenging start.

“We had a difficult start to the season but I feel like we are playing more as a team now which is great,” Paps said.

“The girls understand the structures more and we are obviously playing a lot better.

“I think training has really lifted and that has helped. We are training like we are playing now, which is great.”

Doing her bit to help the Thunder bounce back has been off-season recruit Carly Simons. After crossing over from Whittlesea, Simons hasn’t missed a beat through the early stages of the season, averaging 12 points and eight rebounds per game.

“Carly has been great. She is a really good person to have around and brings a lot to the team,” Paps said.

“She works really hard at training and in games and she always gives 100 per cent. She has fitted in really well.

“As a team, everyone is contributing now, which is great. We are getting some good efforts from girls coming off the bench and that is really helping.”

Keilor has no plans to slow down now and is hoping to take its revival all the way to the post season.

The Thunder is in 10th spot on a congested division 1 ladder.

“We just need to win a couple of games in a row and then we will be back in the hunt,” Paps said.

Keilor will take on Mildura in a home fixture this weekend.
