Family and community are at the heart of an Overnewton Anglican Community College education.
Overnewton’s sense of community is largely manifested through its Family Contribution Scheme, in which parents are required to take part and contribute 18 hours of their time to the college each term.
Parents can be found working in classrooms, supporting with administrative tasks, catering for functions or helping maintain the grounds.
Principal Jim Laussen, appointed in 2001, is a passionate advocate of the benefits to students in having their parents closely connected with the college.
“In every way, when students see their parents giving time to their school it fosters a wonderful partnership between the students, their family and the college,” he says.
Overnewton College has two campuses – Keilor, for preps to year 12s (excluding year 9), and Taylors Lakes for students from prep to year 9.
The college structure comprises a junior school for prep to year 4, middle school for years 5 to 8, a precinct for year 9, and a senior school for years 10 to 12.
Each school has its own special precinct and head teacher to ensure student needs are properly supported at each level.
The year 9 centre, Canowindra, at Taylors Lakes campus, provides a learning experience designed to prepare and equip students for their final years in senior school.
