Boxing: Golden gloves champ Cesur Afacan still learning

Cesur Afacan is not your typical 12-year-old.

The Caroline Springs resident is one of Australia’s brightest young boxing talents, with Victorian and national titles already hanging from around his waist.

Having first stepped into the ring at age four, Afacan quickly found himself at home.

With juniors unable to compete in Victoria until the age of 12, he was forced to go to Queensland to find competition.

The extra travel and unfamiliar surroundings did nothing to slow Afacan’s progress.

Competing in the under 42-kilogram division, the rising star fought his way to the Australian golden gloves championship in Brisbane last year.

Having turned 12 shortly after his victory, Afacan has since added a Victorian title to his growing trophy cabinet.

Afacan’s father and trainer Naz Afacan said his son had always been a natural in the ring.

“He is a very strong and very fit boy,” Naz said. “Technically, I believe there aren’t many better out there in Australia.

“He is quite strong in terms of his core strength. He is still young so he has his development and learning to come.”

The Creekside College student continued his good form in the ring last week, coming second at the Australian titles on the Gold Coast.
