Fire tore through the roof of a house in Sunshine North on Friday morning.
Fire crews were called to the Balcombe Street address just before 6am and arrived to find the roof entirely engulfed in flames.
It took 25 firefighters half an hour to bring the blaze under control, a Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokesman said.
Firefighters have told police they found a hydroponic crop inside the house, a Victoria Police spokeswoman said.
She said investigators would not be able to determine how big the operation is until the burnt-out house had been deemed structurally safe.
No one is believed to be inside. Emergency services were called to the weatherboard and tile house just before 6am and arrived to find the roof fully engulfed.
Investigators are probing what caused the fire.
