WRFL: St Albans scores first victory of the season

St Albans kick-started its Western Region Football League season with a hard-fought 44-point win against Altona on Saturday.

The Saints controlled the match from the opening minutes, booting four goals in the first term to take a 19-point lead at quarter-time.

A further nine goals to four across the next three quarters highlighted St Albans’ strength and handed it the first win of its season, 13.6 (84) to 5.10 (40).

In tough conditions for forwards, Michael Spooner showed just how dangerous he can be around the goals, booting a game-high four majors.

Spooner has kicked 13 goals in the first three rounds.

Around the ground, Saints’ captain Tim Jenkins was outstanding, while Dion Lawson also worked hard.

The win means St Albans jumps to fifth on the division 1 ladder, being one of three sides with a 1-2 record. It has the bye this week.

Elsewhere in round three, Sunshine suffered its first loss of the season, by 28 points to Werribee Districts.

The Kangaroos went into three-quarter time leading by a point but failed to kick a goal in the final term. It was the opposite for the Tigers, who got their game rolling, booting five majors to seal the 10.9 (69) to 5.11 (41) win.

Meanwhile, Albion is still searching for its first win of the season.

The Cats went down to Hoppers Crossing 20.21 (141) to 2.3 (15) on Saturday.
