More than a thousand visitors turned out last Wednesday to Braybrook’s first ever library.
The library is part of the $12.5 million Braybrook community hub, which also includes a sports pavilion, learning centre and integrated early years centre, as well as a community garden, men’s shed, public artworks and a café.
The hub took 15 months to build, with $9 million funding from Maribyrnong council and $3.5 million from the state government.
Maribyrnong mayor Nam Quach said the hub is the centrepiece of the Revitalising Braybrook initiative.
“Council will continue to invest in more partnerships, services and programs to bring about lasting and meaningful change in Braybrook,” the mayor said.
Families and Children Minister Jenny Mikakos joined Footscray MP Marsha Thomson and Cr Quach last Wednesday to open the hub. Ms Mikakos said the project ensures services have the space and flexibility needed to deliver 15 hours of kindergarten alongside a range of other early years programs.
“This new centre will meet the demand for services and give Braybrook families the quality facilities and programs their kids deserve. Bringing services together in a convenient one-stop community hub makes sense for families and children.”
On opening day alone, more than 1290 people visited the library, 37 new members were signed up and 782 loans were made.
The Revitalising Braybrook Action Plan aims to improve education, transport, employment, safety, housing and infrastructure.
