CAPE SCHANCK: Search resumes for missing fishermen

The search has resumed for two fishermen missing in waters off Cape Schanck, on the Mornington Peninsula.

Three men are believed to have been diving for shellfish near rocks at Fingal Beach, on the southern most tip of the Peninsula, when they got into trouble shortly before 8am on Saturday.

All three men are known to regularly frequent the beach.

One of the men, a 50-year-old from Keysborough, made it back to shore and called emergency services, a police spokeswoman said.

But there has been no sign of his diving companions – a 42-year-old man from St Albans and 34-year-old man from Vermont South.

The pair was last seen about 100 metres off shore.

Water Police Search and Rescue and the State Emergency Service resumed the search for the men on Monday morning.

“Our information is telling us that with tides and winds they wouldn’t be too far from where they went in,” a police spokesman said.

Graeme McGillivray, from Volunteer Marine Rescue, said conditions were often treacherous off Fingal Beach.

“It’s a rough coastline around Cape Schanck; you’re not going to go down there for a swim,” he said.

“You can get quite a bit of sea-swell and it can get quite rough.”

He said the conditions on Saturday morning were not out of the ordinary.
