Sunshine North: Zucchini rivals Jack’s beanstalk

A Sunshine North green thumb has credited a daily sprinkling of recycled water for the mammoth zucchini growing in his backyard.

Peter Zaharopoulos, who grows zucchinis, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and pumpkins in his backyard garden, was shocked to observe the zucchini’s rapid growth in the past five weeks.

Standing at just under 150 centimetres, the zucchini is nearly as tall as Mr Zaharopoulos, who said he bought the plant from his local Bunnings.

“I just put water and nothing else on it,” the 73-year-old retiree said. “I’ve never seen one this big.”

The father of three and grandfather of one, who migrated from Greece more than 50 years ago, says his wife Effie will use some of the mammoth zucchini to bake a cake.
