Warrant on armed robber

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Leonidas (Leon) David Evagelistis, wanted over the armed robbery of a Laverton North fast food restaurant on February 8. Police say the 47-year-old Laverton man, who travels on a red mountain bike and public transport, is known to frequent the Keilor area. Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Intersections made safe

Road safety works have started on the Melton Highway at its intersections with McCubbin Drive, Overton Lea Boulevard and Sydenham Road. In the five years to December 2013, 23 casualty crashes occurred at the three intersections. The works include traffic and street light improvements, skid-resistant surfacing, upgrades to signs and line-marking, and an extended right-turn lane into Sydenham Road. The works are funded through the Transport Accident Commission’s $1billion Safe System Road Infrastructure Program and are expected to be completed by the middle of this year.

Fire destroys home

A family of five escaped a fire that destroyed a Keilor Downs unit on February 11. About 30 firefighters attended the Heysham Place home just after 8pm. Neighbours called triple-0 after a smoke alarm alerted them to the fire in the adjoining unit, the middle one of three. The fire is believed to have been caused by an electrical fault and was contained to the ground floor lounge room.
