With more than 156 nationalities calling Brimbank home, it’s only natural this is the perfect place to host a cricket World Cup.
Parsons Reserve, in Sunshine, will bring the world together on March 1, with friendly cricket matches – as well as sideshow fun, a jumping castle, face painting and sausage sizzle – to raise funds for the new children’s ward at Sunshine Hospital.
Funds raised will also go towards the purchase of a defibrillator for Grand United Cricket Club.
World Cup of Sunshine organiser Simon Vallone said there were already a few teams onboard.
“We’ve got a mixture of community and multicultural teams joined up. Western Health are putting together a doctor and nurse team, we’ve got another team from Victoria University, and an Indian and Muslim team,” the Ardeer community worker said.
“It will be more of a family atmosphere rather than professional, and we want to bring the local cricketing community together. I think sometimes we lack that unity in Sunshine, and I’m hoping this is a step towards it.”
Entry is $5 a player and $35 for a team of seven. Teams are welcome to sign up on the day.
The children’s activities, including Milo Cricket, are by gold coin donation and have been provided using grants from Lead West and the Commonwealth Bank.
The event begins at 10am on March 1.
