A controversial gate separating properties on Lohs Lane in Myrniong will be removed.
Moorabool shire councillors voted last week to cancel an existing agricultural licence which covers part of the lane and which requires there be a gate.
Lohs Lane residents Scott and Olivia Fisher applied unsuccessfully to the council last May for cancellation of the licence, which applies to 500 metres of the lane, and for the gate to be removed.
The couple presented last week’s council meeting with a petition signed by 96 road users requesting the licence cancellation.
Mr and Mrs Fisher also presented letters in support of the petition from Ambulance Victoria, Bacchus Marsh police and Myrniong fire brigade.
Councillors then voted in favour of cancelling the licence.
Mrs Fisher said the family was extremely happy with the outcome.
“It’s the right decision,” she said.
“I can’t express how relieved we are. It was a big safety risk.
“If we call an ambulance they can now find us; if we need fire trucks they can now get out here; if we need police to come they can now find us.
“I have three young kids and anything can happen. As a parent you want to protect your kids and this will ensure we have no delays.”
The council will now notify the relevant minister with the information to make the final decision. Pending that decision, council will add the portion of the road on Lohs Lane to the register of public roads as part of its annual update.
Once the final decision is made, the gate will have to be removed within three months.
