Lightning strikes back
City West Falcons started the Victorian Netball League season with a draw on Saturday night. City West made a hot start against Melbourne University Lightning and led by four goals at quarter-time and 13 at half-time. But Lightning hit back in the second half, levelling the scores at 48-all in the dying minutes. Kath Knott was City West’s leading goalscorer with 27.
Leaders lose a thriller
Deer Park suffered just its third loss of the Bowls Victoria pennant season on Saturday, going down to Mitcham. In a battle between first and second on the division 1 ladder, the clash lived up to the hype with Mitcham winning narrowly, 14 (73)-4 (71). Despite the loss, Deer Park is still top of the ladder, five points clear of Mitcham. In its final two matches of the home-and-away season, Deer Park will take on eighth-placed Ferntree Gully and seventh-placed MCC.
Dogs have a batting day out
A brilliant batting performance from Footscray Edgewater has the Bulldogs on top in the Victorian Premier Cricket clash against Hawthorn-Monash University. Footscray smashed 8-326 at Mervyn Hughes Oval on Saturday. The Bulldogs were led by wicketkeeper Dylan Kight, who made 120 from 171 balls. Batting at number four, Kight smashed 13 fours and two sixes in his first century for the season. Also in the runs was Footscray captain Dean Russ, who made 40, and James Crosthwaite 46. With three overs remaining in the day’s play, Footscray declared its innings in search of quick wickets. But Hawthorn weathered the storm and will resume this week at 0-5. The Bulldogs are 11th on the Premier Cricket ladder, six points behind eighth-placed Essendon.
Bowlers do their job
Sydenham-Hillside is in the box seat after day one of the North West Metropolitan Cricket Association clash against Burnside Springs. Bowling first, Sydenham had no trouble against the Burnside batting line-up, taking wickets at regular intervals to remove the Springs for 135 in the 62nd over. In reply, Sydenham is 2-50 from 18 overs, needing a further 86 when play resumes this week. Elsewhere in NWMCA, Kealba Green Gully looks likely to take the points against Clarkefield Brumbies. A five-wicket haul from Evan Long helped Kealba dismiss the Brumbies for 134. Kealba is 1-63 in reply.
