Three artists, with newly completed design degrees, have wasted no time in curating their own exhibition.
Lillian Maxwell, Tegan New and Emilly Milosevska kick-started 2015 with a joint exhibition, Perspectives: Past, Present and Future, which opened at Sunshine’s Art Spaces Gallery last week and will run until the end of February.
The trio were approached to host the exhibition at their Academy of Design graduation ceremony, where each received a bachelor of design art, majoring in fine arts.
Ms Maxwell, 21, is exhibiting a collection of Maori-inspired sketches of family, friends and colleagues.
The Deer Park resident, whose parents hail from New Zealand, worked on the sketches as part of her graduation piece. She plans to do an animation course this year.
Ms Milosevska used her Macedonian heritage to create a series of carnival masks out of latex and muslin. These are displayed alongside a video of the 20-year-old Hillside resident wearing her masks and performing a traditional Macedonian dance.
Ms Milosevska said her work reflected the conflict she felt growing up with Macedonian influences in Australian culture.
For Ms New, 21, her works focus on society’s obsession with smart phones, tablets and other forms of technology.
“It [technology] is making it easier to be a hermit,” the Hoppers Crossing resident said. “I don’t go out much, but I’m still always talking to friends. When I’m about to go to sleep, I worry that I might miss a call or a text message.”
Perspectives: Past, Present and Future will is at the Sunshine Art Spaces Gallery until February 22.
