Keilor: Meet the jazz kings at Overnewton Castle

Brimbank music lovers and sun seekers alike will relish the chance to swing to the mellow sounds of jazz at Keilor’s Overnewton Castle next month.

Now in its second year, the Jazz in the Gardens festival on February 22 will feature three musical acts: the Kimba Griffith Septet with their 1950s West Coast sounds, Gotye trombonist and vocalist Ben Gillespie, and guitarist Ryan Griffith with his blues and swing act Griff’s Gravy Train.

Kimba and Ryan Griffith are jazz greats and this year’s festival curators. They intend bringing new life to the five acres of formal gardens at Overnewton Castle.

“It’s a gorgeous, natural amphitheatre, which harks back to classic jazz festivals and offers the relaxed atmosphere we’re after, where families can get together, enjoy the tunes and have a picnic,” Griffith said.

“We’ll have original jazz tunes as well as stuff that might have been sent to the archives. But we’ve put our own little spin on it.”

The gig starts 11am at Overnewton Castle, 51 Overnewton Road, Keilor. Tickets are $25 for adults; children admitted $10.
