EDFL keeps its Saturday bias

Good Friday will be a hectic day for Brimbank and surrounding clubs in the Essendon District Football League.

Keilor kicks off its premier division season in a showdown with defending premiers Strathmore at Lebanon Reserve with the round five fixture brought forward to accommodate the marquee event.

Taylors Lakes and Hillside will meet in a division 1 local derby at Lionheart Reserve on Good Friday.

There will also be EDFL games played on Anzac Day, which this year fall on a Saturday, and Queens Birthday.

EDFL general manager Marc Turri said the majority of games would remain in the traditional Saturday afternoon timeslot, with a smattering of showpiece events.

“It’s exciting to have more twilight football and games played on public holidays,” he said.

“We recognise the popularity of Saturday afternoon at the footy and we believe this fixture retains the feel of community football, given the vast majority of matches are still in the traditional Saturday afternoon timeslot.”

Keilor Park will start its season with a showpiece event of its own, hosting Roxburgh Park in a twilight match in round 1, while Burnside Heights will have a tough trip to Moonee Valley.

The round one fixtures will be played on April 11.
