A man has caused mayhem on the Calder Freeway on Saturday morning after allegedly speeding along the wrong side of the road for five kilometres, forcing other motorists to swerve out of the way.
Police said the white 2013 Nissan Navara entered the freeway at Sunshine Avenue in Keilor North just before 6am.
The motorist allegedly drove in excess of 100km/h on the wrong side of the road for five kilometres towards Sunbury before he was intercepted by police.
Drivers were forced to swerve out of the path of the oncoming car.
A Ford Fairmont towing a trailer snapped its tow bar as it swerved suddenly, spilling the contents of the trailer across a 100-metre stretch of the road, and causing the closure of three lanes of traffic.
Several other cars were also damaged in the chaos.
A 33-year-old Keilor Downs man has been charged with reckless conduct endangering life and drink-driving offences.
He has been bailed to appear in Sunshine Magistrates’ Court on February 22 next year.
