A former St Albans Secondary College student is fulfilling a life-long dream of directing his own television show.
Daniel Mercieca has just wrapped up filming the pilot for his self-funded drama series, which follows lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender teenagers still in high school.
Mercieca, the show’s executive producer and director, said Subject to Change featured same-sex-attracted lead characters.
“Subject to Change is a coming-of-age drama,” he said.
“We’re setting it in a suburban Australian public high school, well outside the inner- city comfort zone of rainbow flags and wear-it-purple days.
“It’s going to be a rough, homophobic experience for young same-sex attracted students.”
Mercieca said he was in the process of editing the footage for the 25-minute pilot, which he planned to submit to film festivals around the world.
He hopes to bring the show, as a series, to Australian TV screens by late 2015.
“This is 14 years in the making – it’s been my dream,” Merceica said.
The 30-year-old graduated from St Albans Secondary College in 2002 and went straight into a two-year screen-producing course.
Not long after, he moved to Sydney to work for Channel Nine, where he is a producer.
