■ An era has ended at the Williamstown Football Club with the resignation of general manager Brendan Curry after 19 years at the helm. Everyone knows “Cuz”. Like him or not, he has been a very influential figure in football in the west. He is the longest serving general manager/CEO in the history of the club, and in his time he has seen the now stand-alone club aligned with the Bulldogs and Collingwood. He oversaw the massive multi-million dollar redevelopment of the Point Gellibrand Oval. Cuz was rarely seen at president’s lunches, he was busy watching the reserves or the seniors, rather than hobnobbing it. He knows about the junior players coming through the ranks and always had an eye out for a potential player for the Seagulls. I have had my share of moments with Cuz, both good and bad, but I wish him well in whatever the future holds. He was a mover and shaker in footy in the west.
■ It’s Werribee Cup week and I hope Thursday is a day to remember, as it has been in the past. I won’t be attending due to other commitments and I think the importance of the race and the whole day to the city has been diluted in recent years. There was a time that you could not conduct any business in the west on Werribee Cup day but that is well and truly gone. The race no longer holds the importance it once did, and as such the day has been affected. It is still a great day at the races and Werribee is a very good venue for it. I do think the racing world needs to pull its head in on corporate packages for dining and make them realistic. Events like the Werribee Cup would benefit from that in terms of crowd numbers.
■ On November 30, Werribee Cricket Club will take on Hoppers Crossing Cricket Club in a unique T20 game where only players who are signed up for the Movember campaign can participate. The funds raised are going to the Movember charity and the winning club will win the aptly named Movember Shield. It is all happening at Chirnside Park with an under 21 game to kick the day off, followed by those with scary moustaches to finish it. Can I call on the organisers to please name the trophy after a man with the most menacing moustache who played for Werribee, and I think his dad might have been net coach at Hoppers Crossing for a few years. Surely it is the Hughes Trophy or at least the best player wins the Hughes medal.
