Thirteen proved to be the lucky number for the Sunshine Baseball Club on Saturday.
In round seven of the summer league season, the Eagles smashed 13 runs during a dominating win against Bonbeach St Chads.
And it wasn’t just with bat in hand that Sunshine did its damage.
The Eagles refused to give up a run, and have not had a
score against them in their past two matches.
Sunshine coach Earl Byrne was impressed with the performance.
“We scored early and in quite a few innings so it was a pretty good win,” he said.
“Some of the boys were hitting the ball pretty well.
“From my point of view, keeping them to zero runs I thought was pretty big. In games like that you can relax and let some runs in, but the boys were really solid defensively. We didn’t make an error,” Byrne said.
“The pitching was pretty good, too. Rory Meddick went six innings and only gave up a couple of hits.”
Byrne also highlighted the performance of Adam Irons as a standout in the win – as was his team’s aggression while on base. Irons had four hits for the day.
“The other thing I’ve been impressed with is our base running,” Byrne said.
“We’ve been pretty aggressive when the opposition has got the ball or the ball has got away from the catcher. We’ve been running the bases quite well and always looking for that extra base, not just being happy with the one.”
The weekend’s win moves Sunshine back on top of the division 2 ladder.
The Eagles have suffered just one loss this season, which came in round five against Moorabbin.
Sunshine will be looking to keep its winning run going when it takes on Malvern in a home match this week.
Malvern is third on the ladder, with a 4-2 record.
