HANGING ROCK: State backs $1 million upgrade

Toilets, buildings and roads will be upgraded at Hanging Rock as part of a $1 million agreement between Macedon Ranges council and the state government.

The works are on top of $3 million in improvements already under way to improve the experience of people visiting the Rock and attending concerts in the east paddock.

Mayor Roger Jukes said the government’s commitment of $250,000 over four years would help address infrastructure and environmental issues.

The Rock’s ageing main toilet block will be upgraded, paths on the Rock itself repaired and a road behind the discovery centre maintained in the first year of the agreement, with further works to come.

The council has included $131,000 in its budget for this year to replace barbecues and picnic furniture, and to build a new visitor entry system.

Cr Jukes said visitors would notice considerable improvements over the next few years. ‘‘The Rock is a state-owned asset which is much loved by people everywhere,’’ he said.

‘‘The support of the state will help us maintain it to the standard that the community and visitors expect.’’

Other improvements funded by a $2 million federal government grant, including new lighting and electrical supply upgrades, are also under way.

Lancefield’s Joe Schembri, who has attended concerts at Hanging Rock, said the improvements were welcome.

‘‘The facilities that are there could certainly be better,’’ he said.

Contractors began setting up the stage for the Rolling Stones’ November 8 concert last week.
