A herd of goats escaped from a trailer that overturned on the Calder Freeway on Monday night.
Macedon Ranges highway patrol’s Sergeant Geoff Neil said police received calls about a car with a flat tyre towing a trailer loaded with about 15 goats about 7.30pm.
Officers waited on the freeway near Gisborne but the car never arrived.
About 8pm police received a call that the car and trailer had tipped over near the Macedon turnoff.
Sergeant Neil said the driver had returned to Kyneton after noticing the flat tyre and removed the front axle before returning to the road.
The weight of the goats was too heavy for the trailer, causing it to tip over.
Sergeant Neil said the driver and his passengers rounded up the goats before attempting to remove the damaged trailer from the road.
The goats escaped while their backs were turned.
Sergeant Neil said the man would be fined for using an unroadworthy trailer. The goats have yet to be found.
If you spot the runaway goats contact Kyneton police on 5421 2900.
