They came, they saw, they conquered.
It was wall-to-wall superheroes and all-round awesomeness at Melbourne Showgrounds on the weekend for the Armageddon Expo.
More than 20,000 fans stepped into character in what has become the biggest annual excuse for cosplay dress-ups across all genres from sci-fi and fantasy to manga and movies.
“It’s nerdy nirvana,” laughed Jeremy Laing who rocked up as Ironman with girlfriend Rose Talbot-Walsh as the Black Widow.
“This is my third Armageddon Expo and I have been Ironman each time. I made the suit myself and it took about three months, so it’s nice to get some wear out of it.”
Stars appearing at this year’s expo included Peter Hambleton who played Gloin in The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, the high-flying Helen Slater from Supergirl and Michael Hogan of Battlestar Galactica and Teen Wolf fame.
However, by far the biggest drawcard was Jenna Coleman, who plays Clara Oswald in the current series of Dr Who.
Whovians from all over Victoria flocked for a chance to meet the Impossible Girl and inspect a full scale Dr Who series 8 TARDIS.
Kristen Nicholls, treasurer of Dr Who Club of Victoria, described Armageddon 2014 as a great boost for Whovians.
“Jenna Coleman was promoted as the main guest, so we did actually have the main drawcard this year,” she said.
“She was friendly with a bubbly, happy personality and gave extra time to the kids.
“We gave out more than 400 flyers from our stall. There’s certainly a lot of interest.”
