Dogs’ openers dominate

A 185-run opening stand between Dean Russ and James Crosthwaite led Footscray to an 11-run win against Northcote in Saturday’s Premier Cricket. Russ went on to make 79 while Crosthwaite’s 108 was his first triple-figure score for the Bulldogs since joining the club in the off-season. The perfect launch allowed the Footscray lower order to hit out, bringing up an imposing 8-243 after 50 overs. In reply, Northcote gave the target a
real shake-up, thanks to captain
Steven Taylor, the opener making 76 from 109 balls in an innings that included five sixes. Lower-order contributions from Aidan March and Liam Scammell kept the scoreboard ticking over but the target eventually proved too much, Northcote’s innings closing at 5-232.

Parkers in top spot

Deer Park secured a strong win against Keysborough in the Bowls Victoria metropolitan pennant competition on Saturday. The Parkers won 16-83 to 2-73 on the Keysborough green. The win maintains Deer Park’s perfect start to the season, which has it on top of the division 1 table with a 3-0 record. Deer Park will look to keep its winning run going when it takes on the second-placed Burwood Districts this weekend. The match will be played at Deer Park Bowls Club. Meanwhile, in other metropolitan pennant results, Melton fought its way to another vital win in its quest to stay in division 1. Melton proved too good for Lilydale, winning 16-87 to 2-70.
