Good times come full circle

A Sunshine North man crippled in an accident 18 years ago has won the ultimate mates’ trip away. Peter Thomson spent four days on XXXX Island at the southern Great Barrier Reef with three close buddies after winning a Thirsty Camel promotion. Mr Thomson, a self-described “competition freak”, had to write in 25 words or less why he deserved the trip. “I was left crippled after attempting to help a victim of a drunk-driving accident about 18 years ago,” he told judges. “My father had helped look after me for many years … he passed away suddenly last year.” When told of his win, Mr Thomson invited three long-time friends, John Hurt, Ray McNamara and Elio Menegol, on the trip. The trio spent a long weekend at the beach, playing footy, fishing and relaxing by a campfire. “For me, the highlight was okaying classic catches in crystal blue water. I won, walking stick and all.

The only problem I had was having to come home.”
