If you like films with a local feel and a hint of horror, this year’s Sunshine Short Film Festival is sure to tickle your fancy.
Organisers are whittling down entries to a final 15, which will screen at Village cinemas in Sunshine on Halloween.
Budding filmmakers were given the challenge to show off all the suburb has to offer in less than five minutes, working to the themes of ‘Sunshine’ and ‘Halloween’.
Sunshine Business Association president Bruce White says the standard of this year’s entries is exceptional.
“We’ve had, in years past, two or three films that stand out,” he said. “This year, we’re seeing a lot of skill.
‘‘There’s also some really good acting coming through; these people would kill it on
Home and Away. The cinematography is also first-class.
“Although there’s a Halloween theme, there’s some funny ones, some cute ones, some feel-good ones and some musical ones.
“There’s a whole blend of different approaches”
Mr White is encouraging film-lovers to get in on the act and dress for the screening in their best Halloween costume.
Last year’s school category winner, Rising Sunshine Style, proved popular on YouTube, with more than 72,000 views.
Prizes of up to $5000 are on offer across five categories: for people’s choice primary, secondary, tertiary and open, and a new judges’ award decided by a panel of professional filmmakers.
Entries for the Sunshine Short Film Festival will screen on Friday, October 31.
The $15 tickets include popcorn.
