Werribee Districts star midfielder Matthew Dean took out the Western Region Football League’s best and fairest award last week. Dean won the Barry Priest Medal with 21 votes, ahead of St Albans player Joel West and Hoppers Crossing ruckman Wayde Skipper, who finished second and third on 19 and 18 votes respectively. Dean played in 21 games for the Tigers and was named among his side’s best players on 18 occasions. The award caps off a brilliant year for the Werribee co-captain who was also named in the WRFL team of the year and led the Tigers to the finals in their first season back in the league.

Footscray Edgewater got its premier cricket premiership defence off to the best possible start with a three-wicket win against Casey-South Melbourne on Saturday. The Bulldogs won the toss and sent Casey in to bat in good conditions at Mervyn Hughes Oval. Despite missing last season’s opening bowler Jake Haberfield, the Bulldogs had no problems making inroads into the top order and had Casey 2-20. The wickets continued to tumble, with Ben Green and Michael Kelly doing most of the damage. The pair claimed two wickets each as Casey posted 8-165 in its 50 overs. Footscray Edgewater reached the target with three wickets and nine balls to spare. Travis Dean blasted 66 and Hamish Winter-Irving’s 33 helped secure the win. Footscray Edgewater plays Ringwood in another one day fixture this week.
