Works on the eastern section of the East West Link are going full steam ahead – but a route is still to be decided for the western section.
In a statement released last week, state Roads Minister Terry Mulder confirmed that the government had yet to map out the route for stage two of the East West Link, despite already signing off on the $6.8 billion eastern section.
“This will be subject to a detailed planning process and community consultation,” Mr Mulder said.
“We are currently in the process of bringing a technical advisory team on board. It will develop designs, undertake planning and, critical to these activities, will consult with the community.
“As the route, interchange and designs are not yet developed, it’s simply too early to identify any potential property impacts.”
The East West Link, when complete, will be a new tollway road linking the eastern section at CityLink through to the Western Ring Road.
But the whole project could be scrapped if Labor wins the state election in November.
According to Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews, the East West Link contracts are worthless.
“Labor will give Victorians a choice between a dodgy, dud toll road tunnel that costs a lot but doesn’t do very much, and better public transport,” Mr Andrews said.
Brimbank administrators chairman John Watson said the council was keen to see the western section delivered.
“The western section of the East West Link will improve access to Melbourne’s west and help to generate increased investment and employment in Brimbank,” he said.
“The council is looking forward to an announcement of the alignment for the western section of the East West Link and the application of a reservation which will enable decision-making in relation to future investment and development.”
