A Caroline Springs father and daughter team is hoping to cycle a combined distance of almost 500 kilometres next month, raising funds for cancer research along the way.
Howard Campey and his nine-year-old daughter Mackenzie are part of the Great Cycle Challenge, which starts tomorrow and continues throughout October.
The challenge was launched last year and raised $1.2 million for cancer research at the Children’s Medical Research Institute.
“I’d love for us to make it a yearly tradition. It gives us some quality time together, and at the same time we’re raising money for a great cause,” Mr Campey said.
The dynamic duo – who are registered as The Super Awesome Cycle Team – have raised more than $400 so far, but are hoping for more.
“We’ll be doing all we can,” Mr Campey said. “We’ve made a few loose-change cans from coffee containers and we’ll hit the local shops and see who wants to help out.”
The pair will use a GPS to track their daily rides. The distance of each ride will then be sent to their individual fund-raising page so friends and family can track their progress.
Mr Campey is aiming to ride 400 kilometres, while Mackenzie is hoping to crack 75 kilometres.
Great Cycle Challenge event manager Greg Johnson says this year’s aim is to raise more than $1.5 million.
