Residents living in Bendigo Street in Collingwood have had their fences vandalised – but they couldn’t be happier with the result.
The residents allowed east west link protesters to paint a mural across their back fences which run along Hoddle Street and face the exit to the Eastern Freeway.
The row of houses are in the direct line of the east west link works, should they go ahead.
Keith Fitzgerald has lived in his house for 70 years, but will lose it if the project continues.
He said he and other residents allowed protesters to paint the mural, which extends about 80 metres along Hoddle Street, on their back fences to help fight the east west link plans.
“I’m fighting the east west link not only for my property, but for our heritage, clean air and I’m fighting for the residents around the area whose houses will be affected by collateral damage,” he said.
About 40 people contributed to painting the mural on Saturday, many of them from the inner north, and some from the west, which will also be affected by the road tunnel.
The protesters hope the mural draws the attention of motorists as they travel along Hoddle Street in Collingwood.
