After living in Caroline Springs “since it was nothing but paddocks”, Goran Kesic, the Liberal candidate for Kororoit in the November state election, believes he’s just the man for the job.
“I feel passionately about working with the local community … [it] needs certainty and a government with a real plan for the future,” the 46-year-old said. “I have the time, the energy and the passion to invest into Kororoit.”
The linguist and interpreter said that since arriving in 1998 following the Yugoslav wars, he’s come to believe that Australia truly is the land of opportunity.
Mr Kesic has previously worked for the United Nations and the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe.
“I have learned that with dedication and hard work you can achieve anything,” he says.
“As the Liberal candidate in 2010, I worked collaboratively with local residents and fought hard to represent the growing region … I fought hard for the St Albans railway crossing to be removed and that’s now going ahead.”
Mr Kesic said he would fight to see a rail overpass built across Station Road in Derrimut, and the duplication of Taylors Road in Sydenham.
“Currently it’s just a single lane, and when you’re caught behind a bus you have to wait while passengers jump on and off. It creates bottlenecks at peak hour,” he said.
He said a bridge over Westwood Drive to connect to Calder Park Drive in Taylors Lakes was also a priority.
“I want to attract investment and create more jobs, particularly in areas like Deer Park, Albanvale and Kings Park and, of course, expand access to health care and aged services,” he said.
Kororoit has been held by Labor MP Marlene Kairouz since a 2008 by-election.
Mr Kesic will run against Ms Kairouz and Shashi Turner, candidate for the newly formed Voice For The West party.
