‘Cold turkey’ for St Albans speedster

A 37-year-old St Albans man who allegedly hid 24 grams of heroin in his underwear fronted the Sunshine Magistrates Court on Friday, charged with trafficking a drug of dependence and various driving offences.

Tuan Anh Le appeared before magistrate Jennifer Grubissa on charges related to a September 12 incident and to seek bail.

Brimbank’s Senior Sergeant Shannon Symons told the court he arrested Le after pulling him over on St Albans Road after seeing his blue Mazda 2 sedan speeding down the middle lane.

“He was doing about 115 kilometres an hour in a 60-kilometre zone,” Senior Sergeant Symons said. “When we asked him to step out of the vehicle he was sweating and shaking.

“He was holding his crotch with one hand. We asked him to produce what was in his pants … there was a small struggle before he produced one gram of heroin in foil and then 23 grams of heroin wrapped in toilet paper.”

Le’s defence lawyer, James Mortley, asked that his client receive bail, saying he had gone “cold turkey” from heroin in the seven days in custody since his arrest.

In considering Le’s bail application, magistrate Grubissa questioned the level of supervision that would be available at his family home and the seriousness of the driving allegations he was facing.

The case resumes today.
