WEATHER: Week of sun as city warms to spring

Melbourne is slowly emerging from under its layer of rain and gloom as the sun gingerly extends its rays, warming the land and lengthening the days.

With school holidays and the Royal Melbourne Show just around the corner, Melburnians can look forward to a week of sunshine and clear conditions, with temperatures rising to a balmy 25 degrees by Wednesday.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Rod Dickson said that despite some chilly days, September has been warmer than average.

“The average temperature for September is 17.3 degrees, and this year in Melbourne we’ve already reached 18,” Mr Dickson said.

However, he said Melbourne spring weather was unpredictable, and that “weather never stays the same here”.

“We have seen 30 degrees in September before, in 2006, and we’ve already had a few days into the 20s,” he said.

“We also had a cold front go through [on Wednesday], and we had 15 degrees on Tuesday. It varies.”

Mr Dickson said Melbourne was gradually warming up, with longer days and more intense sunlight warming the land.

But oceans are still cold, and southerly winds will continue to bring some chill to the city, he said.

The forecast for the next week is: Thursday, 15; Friday, 17; Saturday, 18; Sunday, 19; Monday, 22; Tuesday, 24; and Wednesday, 25.
