MELBOURNE: Week of warm weather ahead

Sun-starved Melburnians can look forward to short-sleeves and sunscreen as a week of warm weather bathes the city in sunshine.

From Wednesday to Monday, the mercury will hover firmly above the 20 degree mark, stretching its needle to a balmy 22 degrees on Sunday.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s senior forecaster, Richard Carlyon, said Melburnians had not experienced such a stretch of warm weather in August since 1965.

“We are forecasting six days above 20 degrees, five of them in August,” he said.

“It is unusual to have a stretch of weather like this in August — usually, you get three or four days of warmth in a row, but five is quite prolonged.”

But Mr Carlyon warned that Melbourne’s sunny days were numbered, with rain expected to lash the city for most of next week as temperatures drop to mid-to-high teens.

“It will all come to an end next week, as there is a cold front moving in from the west,” he said.

“We will see temperatures drop to about 17 for most of next week, [which] will be closer to the average.”

Mornings will also remain cool — “but not frosty” — as temperatures hover at the 7 to 9 degree mark, Mr Carlyon said.
