Police hunt taxi bandit

Police are appealing for witnesses to the armed robbery of a taxi driver in Sunshine last week. The cabbie was called to Cornwall Road, Sunshine, about 6.40am last Thursday and found a man waiting on the street. Detective Sergeant Mark Guthrie said the man threatened the driver with a machete and demanded money. The cabbie handed over cash and the man ran off. An hour later, the same man called a taxi to a home in Millbank Drive, Deer Park, and again pulled out a machete. The driver jumped out of the cab and scared off the man, who is described as Caucasian, 20-25, of medium height and thin build. Information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000

Fire alarm to the rescue

A smoke alarm saved the lives of a couple in their 70s and their dog and bird in a fire at a Murchison Avenue, Taylors Lakes, home last week. The alarm woke the couple just before 6am and they found the back of the house alight. A fault in an old radio is believed to have started the fire.
