NEWPORT: Sex creep strikes 14th woman

Police have confirmed a 14th woman has been sexually assaulted in the Newport area since April 29.

Fourteen women have been indecently assaulted in the vicinity of Mason Street in Newport and Altona North between April 29 and August 16.

Victoria Police spokeswoman, Leading Senior Constable Lee Thomson, said police were investigating if an attack on Saturday was linked.

“The sexual crime squad are investigating the circumstances surrounding the sexual assault of a woman in Newport on Saturday morning,” she said.

“Detectives are following up a number of avenues of inquiry in relation to this incident, including whether or not this is linked to the recent reports of a series of indecent assaults nearby, and as such it would not be appropriate to comment further at this time.”

The attack happened amid intense police scrutiny on Newport.

An information caravan had been in Mason Street each day last week and police, including the mounted branch, were regularly patrolling the area.

Hobsons Bay’s Inspector Richard Paterson said police had received nearly 100 tip-offs.

Police said the sex attacks were committed from 6am to 8am and 6pm to 8pm, with the man grabbing women from behind in all but one instance.

The women have been usually exercising or wearing headphones.

The attacker is described as Caucasian, wears a dark hoodie pulled over his face and sometimes rides a mountain bike.
