An Armadale school was evacuated after a suspicious package was found nearby on Thursday morning.
Security at the King David Jewish school, on Orrong Road Armadale, called police at 7am after they spotted a ute parked with its rear wheel on the kerb near the school and a suspicious package in the back seat.
The middle school campus was evacuated and about 300 students are teachers were moved to the school’s arts and administration centre across the road.
The arson and explosives squad used a remote-controlled robot to examine the ute, which was parked near the corner of Karbrook Avenue and Stawell Street.
Upon examination, police discovered the suspicious package was a number of tools underneath a blanket and the area was declared safe at 11am.
Police said the tools belonged to the vehicle owner’s son.
The campus is for the school’s Year 3 to 8 students.
King David spokeswoman Jackie Ellis said the school maintained a thorough security presence that had been heightened recently due to events in the Middle East and elsewhere.
“We have security guards at each of our campuses and also parents that are trained to supply extra support,” she said.
Ms Ellis said a regular morning patrol of the school area by professional security staff and parent volunteers uncovered the suspicious package on Thursday morning.
