Hollywood legend Lauren Bacall has died. She was 89 years old.
According to US media reports, Bacall died of a massive stroke at her home in Los Angeles on Tuesday morning.
TMZ quoted a family source and trade website The Hollywood Reporter has since confirmed her death.
Bacall was born Betty Joan Perske on September 16, 1924. As an actress in Hollywood, she was best known for her distinctive husky voice in a string of movies, including How to Marry a Millionaire, The Mirror Has Two Faces and Designing Women.
The star of more than 60 films, Bacall was once married to the iconic Humphrey Bogart. They were married until his death in 1957 and starred togther in Key Largo in 1948.
The Bogart Estate, which hosts Bogart films in Key Largo, California, has tweeted its sorrow over the loss of Bacall.
She was also one of Hollywood’s most honoured actresses, first winning a Tony Award in 1970 for her role in the musical Applause.
In 1997 she won a Screen Actors Guild award, a Golden Globe and the San Diego Film Critics Society award for her work on The Mirror Has Two Faces.
In 1993 she was the recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille honorary Golden Globe award.
In 2009 was the recipient of an honorary Academy Award.
She later married Jason Robards in 1961 but they divorced in 1969.
Bacall had three children.
