Baseball: Sunshine women taking to diamond

Sunshine is ready to hit the Victorian baseball season running with the reformation of a women’s team.

It will be the Eagles’ first women’s side for 15 years.

Co-ordinator Glenn Letts said it was an exciting development.

“Twenty years ago, women’s baseball was entered into the program,” he said.

“We actually won the first premiership and we won it the year following. We haven’t had a women’s team for years, so it’s exciting … we’ve got half a team at the moment. All we need to do is recruit about another half-dozen and we are right to go.”

It’s been a busy 12 months for the club, which re-introduced tee-ball for juniors last year. Fifteen youngsters committed last year and Letts hopes to see similar numbers this season.

The Eagles will hold come-and-try days throughout August for junior and senior players. “In the past it has just been for the juniors, but now we are incorporating seniors as well,” Letts said.

“We hope they come along and enjoy themselves and are keen to sign up and play baseball.” For more details, email glennjmg@hotmail.com.
