A dominant performance by Patrick Wiggins helped Sunshine secure its sixth win of the Western Region Football League season.
Wiggins made the forward line his own on Saturday, booting seven goals against Albion in his side’s 15.14 (104)-7.6 (48) win.
Sunshine coach Brett Jacobs was rapt with the effort from his star forward.
“Patrick has had a great season,” Jacobs said. “He covers a lot of ground and he works really hard.
“At times, we haven’t used the ball all that well and we haven’t created any space for him.
“We were able to use the ball a bit better and give him some good supply yesterday … he had a lot to work with. When he does that, he is going to kick a few goals. He kicked 7.3 yesterday and he gave a few off, and was a very influential player for us.”
The Sunshine backline also played its part in the win.
After conceding three goals in the first quarter, the Kangaroos kept Albion goalless in the next two terms.
“We knew it was going to be a danger game and we put a big emphasis on playing four really good quarters,” Jacobs said.
“The key was discipline. We leaked a couple of late goals in the first quarter.
“I thought our back six really played tight and didn’t give their forwards any room.
“Our midfielders really worked hard both ways and our forwards were able to cash in.
“I think that second quarter really helped set up the win.”
On what was a tough day for Albion, Todd Finco showed his class and was among the Cats’ best players. He was well supported by Dylan Sloman and James Taylor.
With neither team able to make finals, there were still bragging rights on the line, with Sunshine now moving four points clear of Albion on the ladder.
In round 18, the Kangaroos will finish their season against Spotswood while Albion will take on Port Melbourne Colts.
In other WRFL division 1 senior results from the weekend, Deer Park smashed Altona 27.21 (183)-3.6 (24) and St Albans defeated Port Melbourne 18.12 (120)-10.11 (71).
