Ben Westover is gearing up for the ride of his life.
The 34-year-old is one of 40 cyclists to take on the annual Ronald McDonald House Charities Ride for Sick Kids – a seven-day, 500-kilometre bike ride through Victoria and Tasmania at the end of this month.
It will be the third time Mr Westover, a Keilor North McDonald’s franchisee, has tackled the ride. He’s hoping to raise $3500.
Describing himself as an “occasional cyclist”, at best, Mr Westover has been riding 150 kilometres a week in preparation.
“This year we are riding more than 500 kilometres across two states, but it’s nothing compared with the challenges faced by families currently staying in the [Ronald McDonald]houses,” he said. “As a McDonald’s operator, we get to spend a bit of time at the house and hear the stories of people staying there. I’ve been lucky enough never to have to check-in there myself and, touch wood, I never have to.
“I see it as a worthwhile thing to try and raise funds for charity, and it’s always a bit of fun.”
Ronald McDonald House Charities support seriously ill children and their families through a range of programs, including the Ronald McDonald House, which provides a home away from home for the family of children undergoing treatment.
