Deer Park actor Steven Haar looks to big-screen success

It’s been a big year for Steven Haar. The Deer Park actor was invited to the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year and has scored a cameo role in a new flick directed by one of his favourite directors.

Haar, whose movie favourites growing up included The Three Stooges, has spent his life chasing roles both behind and in front of the camera.

He boasts a resumé of feature films, short movies and screenplays that he has been involved with including Plan 9, Dante’s Inferno and M Is for Malarkey.

But it was his job as associate producer for the Australian feature film Mystery: Born to Rock – in which he also had a small acting role – that resulted in his invitation to Cannes this year for the film’s screening.

“[Cannes] was scary at first,” Haar said. “I’d never been to France before, but things got off on the right foot straight away and to see my hard work on the big screen was awesome.”

It was at Cannes that he also met up with his idol, director Lloyd Kaufman, who has since offered Haar a cameo role in his new film, Return to Nuke ‘Em High Volume 2. “I was really rapt that I was chosen to be in the film.”

Haar, who loves both comedy and horror film genres, said his ultimate role would be in a movie combining the two.

“It would be awesome to be the bad guy in a horror movie like Scream because it would be playing against type and no one would ever guess it was me,” he said.

“I’d also love to be in a remake of The Three Stooges. I’ve always wanted to entertain people and make them laugh.”
